a discipline in pleasure & and education in gratitude

It's the fourth day of January, and I have managed to eat well, exercise and take a photo for three days in a row. I just wanted to get that down on paper (or screen) for future encouragement and motivation.

Today was Emma's turn for photos. She is turning 11 in a few days, and has grown seven inches in the past year! These days she likes the look of "serious" pictures of herself better "smiley" pictures, so they make up most of the shots. Even though she spends more of her day in a smile than straight faced, and has a laugh that will light up a room. For the photo of the day, a momentary breeze caught her hair on an otherwise calm day. It was my pick of the bunch.

My second favorite was this photo. I've taken photos like this of Emma for several years, and I've always loved how they turn out. There are a couple here and here.

"The fact is that purification and austerity
are even more necessary for the appreciation
of life and laughter than for anything else.
To let no bird fly past unnoticed,
to spell patiently the stones and weeds,
to have the mind a storehouse of sunsets,
requires a discipline in pleasure and an education in gratitude."
-G.K. Chesterton, 'Twelve Types.'
